Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about CGPA calculation in Nigeria.

How do I calculate my CGPA on a 5.0 scale?
Multiply each course's credit units by the grade point (A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1, F = 0) to get Quality Points (QP). Sum all QPs and divide by total credit units for your semester GPA. CGPA is total cumulative QPs ÷ total accumulated credit units.
What CGPA do I need for a First Class degree in Nigeria?
The NUC mandates a CGPA of 4.50 – 5.00 for First Class Honours. Second Class Upper (2:1) is 3.50 – 4.49. Second Class Lower (2:2) is 2.40 – 3.49. Third Class is 1.50 – 2.39, and Pass is 1.00 – 1.49.
What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA is your grade point average for a single semester. CGPA is your Cumulative Grade Point Average — the weighted running average across all semesters in your programme. Use our calculator to compute both instantly.
Does GPA Tools support the polytechnic 4.0 grading scale?
Yes. GPA Tools supports both the Nigerian university 5.0 scale and the polytechnic 4.0 scale. Simply select your institution type in the GPA calculator.
How do I convert my Nigerian CGPA to the US 4.0 scale?
Go to the Conversion tool on GPA Tools. Enter your 5.0 CGPA and it will instantly output your US 4.0 equivalent and percentage score — useful for scholarship and graduate school applications abroad.
Is GPA Tools free to use?
Yes, completely free. No account, no app download, no ads in the tool. Open it on any device and start calculating immediately.
